Entitlement vs. Work Ethic

Football coaching legend Vince Lombardi famously said: “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”

He was right. There is no substitute for intense effort. But a lot has changed in our culture since the days of Lombardi. Over the last decade we have seen a rise in the entitlement mentality. A growing number mistakenly believe that they have the “right” to certain economic outcomes. Why work hard when society, the government, our parents or people who have more than we do have a “duty” to make our lives comfortable?

In reality, the entitlement mentality is a product of laziness and delusion. No one is entitled to success. It must be earned through sweat, effort, time and character.

Give me a person of average intelligence who is willing to work hard, versus a privileged genius who is not, and I will pick the hard working Average Joe every day.
